Stretching Fields

Water Gardens: activation of the river front

East Side, Manhattan, NYC.

Studies in Landscape Architecture_Performative Surfaces

Stretching Fields is generated thorugh diagrammatic explorations of the studying of tension systems and the vectorial forces that maintain the balance.  Exploring the capability of change in tensile structures, a pier for water harvesting was proposed for the East Side river front in Manhattan.  The Pier is composed of a tensile structure with a branchial skin that would permit the piert to expand and contract as needed.  Since the island of Manhattan does not have an autonomous fresh water source, the pier would collect fresh water and as it fills with water the pier would contract in length and expand the cavities in able to hold more water.
